Spelling and Phonics
Whinfield Primary School has developed a curriculum which is ambitious and designed to give all pupils the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
In Spelling and Phonics, the whole school curriculum has been designed very carefully to ensure that the knowledge and skills are taught in a sequential order which will ensure pupils know more and remember more. Our phonics teaching, using Little Wandle, demonstrates effective practice through direct teaching in frequent, short bursts, consistency of approach, secure and systematic progression, the pace of learning, repeated practice, application of phonics using matched decodable books and early identification of children at risk of falling behind, linked to the provision of effective keep-up support. Children then are ready to progress through our Spelling Curriculum which covers the National Curriculum spelling objectives.
Staff follow the ‘Little Wandle’ scheme for phonics as a structure which has been adapted for each year group and the needs of our pupils. We use assessment to identify starting points for the children due to their stage of phonic knowledge.
Staff follow the Spelling Shed scheme for spelling which has been adapted for each year group and the needs of our pupils by the provision of differentiated lists from the previous year group if needed. It covers both spelling patterns and statutory spellings for each year group. It includes some flexibility for including subject or topic specific spellings when needed.
