Curriculum – Mathematics

Maths

Planning

  • All staff follow the White Rose Long term Plan and schemes of work as a structure. See tables below.
  • Lesson plans are adapted to fit the need of the pupils.
  • Opportunities to reason mathematically interwoven into lessons.
  • Strategies taught to enhance problem solving skills to encourage pupils to be systematic, generalise and seek out patterns
  • KS1 and 2 Times Tables termly planner gives a term-by-term breakdown of which tables are taught and when, in line with the National Curriculum.
  • Additional resources such as Ten Town and Numberblocks enhance provision in EYFS.
  • Times Tables Rockstars and Numbots used as a tool at school and home to enhance recall.
Teaching

  • One maths lesson per day in KS1 and 2.
  • In Reception one focused maths carpet activity per day and one focused adult led activity in the little room per week with all of the areas in the little room being maths focused activities, completed by the children independently. All activities link to that week’s maths focus, as do the challenges in continuous provision.
  • Maths lesson starters are focused on revisiting, practising and consolidating.
  • Tasks provide opportunities for varied practice so pupils come across a concept in a range of representations.
  • Red/Blue 0-9 cards used as starters throughout the school (0-5) in Reception to develop fluency and automatic recall with single digit calculations with a view to being able to apply these skills and facts to mathematics involving more complex numbers, emphasis on related facts and making links.
  • Starters of the day are mathematical, this is aimed at revisiting, practising and consolidating.

Overview

The small step approach is a logical progression designed to ensure that pupils will come back to topics time and time again. Units ensure progression and revisiting of skills.

Reception focus is to deliver a curriculum that embeds mathematical thinking and talk. It allows for key mathematical concepts to be revisited and developed across the year with opportunities to develop the understanding of shape, measure and spatial thinking.

The focus in Year 1 on number theory is intended to give new Key Stage 1 pupils a solid grounding in the fundamentals of primary school maths ahead of Year 2. Topics: shape, position and direction, length, height, weight, volume, money and time.

Year 2 builds on the base established by Year 1 to prepare pupils for KS1 SATs and KS2 beyond. The Autumn term acts as consolidation of Year 1 learning. Topics: shape, position and direction, length, height, weight, volume, capacity, money, time, temperature and statistics.

In Year 3 pupils are reintroduced to a number of topics to help them further develop their maths skills and lay the foundations for future learning in KS2 maths. Much of Year 3 is focused on establishing a firm understanding of number theory. Topics: shape, length and perimeter, statistics, money, mass and capacity and time.

By Year 4 most pupils have a firm grasp of basic maths skills and their mental maths recall should be becoming automatic even with calculations involving 2- and 3-digit numbers. Security in times tables knowledge up to 12 x 12 is very important, and reasoning should begin to come to the fore when pupils are presented with questions that really challenge them. Topics: length and perimeter, area, statistics, money, time, position and direction and shape.

By the time pupils reach Year 5 they should be confident with both one and two-step problems using the four operations, either singularly or mixed operation problems. Whilst there is still a focus on times tables, more of a focus will be on further mental strategies. Topics: perimeter and area, statistics, converting units, volume, position and direction and shape.

The work that takes place in Year 6 maths is a mixture of consolidating previously taught topics and strategies and new concepts and further challenge too. Pupils should be working independently now and be able to work on three-step problems. Topics: length and perimeter, area, statistics, money, time, position and direction and shape. In the Summer term consolidation, investigations and preparations for Year 7.
