Whinfield Primary School have developed a curriculum which is ambitious and designed to give all pupils the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
In history the whole school curriculum has been designed very carefully in conjunction with all staff to ensure that the knowledge and skills are taught in a sequential order which will ensure pupils know more and remember more.
We follow the National Curriculum for history. At Whinfield, this is an enquiry-based, chronological curriculum which is adapted to meet the needs of the children as it begins with what is in the children’s living memory and by year 6 includes a study of features, causation and consequences of several key periods in history. Links to local history are included wherever possible e.g. in Year 5 the children study Joseph Pease, and in Year 2 they study places of historical significance within County Durham.
A whole school overview is attached to this page detailing our curriculum in history.
