History
Whinfield Primary School have developed a curriculum which is ambitious and designed to give all pupils the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
In history the whole school curriculum has been designed very carefully in conjunction with all staff to ensure that the knowledge and skills are taught in a sequential order which will ensure pupils know more and remember more. In History, there are golden threads (invasion, law and order, settlements, conflict, progress and change, historical figures and religion and beliefs) which the children are explicitly taught. These are repeatedly woven into each year group’s units, where appropriate, to deepen the children’s understanding of history and to help them make links between themes and concepts.
We follow the National Curriculum for history. At Whinfield, this is an enquiry-based, chronological curriculum which is adapted to meet the needs of the children as it begins with what is in the children’s living memory and by year 6 includes a study of features, causation and consequences of several key periods in history. Links to local history are included wherever possible e.g. in Year 5 the children study Joseph Pease, and in Year 2 they study places of historical significance within County Durham.
